Now that Rage Against the Machine and Killing in the Name have secured their number 1 slot in the UK singles chart, its time to look at the far more important matter of number 1 rankings in the major search engines for the phrase "Christmas".
This is something that we have looked at over the last couple of years, in 2007 & 2008.
In 2007 the results were as follows:
Google.co.uk - www.northpole.com
Yahoo - Wikipedia
MSN - Encarta Encyclopedia
In 2008, there were some slight chan... Read More.

Last week I posted about restructuring your website and the SEO considerations of doing this so I thought I’d follow this up with some information about internal linking on your website.
As Tom mentioned in his post last week reviewing your SEO campaign for 2010 should not be forgotten in the rush to get everything ready for Christmas so reviewing the internal linking structure of your website is a great New Year’s Resolution.
The internal linking structure of your website is important... Read More.

If you are planning to restructure your website in some way then you need to consider the SEO impact of doing this and ensure you are aware of the search engine visibility of your site when you are working on these changes.
Restructuring your site can at times be easier than a complete redesign and when you are looking at changing your products it is often more appropriate to move pages around than perform a total redesign. However, if you are removing pages from your site, you need to make s... Read More.

Early this year, the major search engines got together to announce a new tag that can be added to the <head> of a web document, commonly refered to as the canonical tag. This was a way of "fixing" duplicate content issues on a website, by ensuring any pages that were duplicated used the same canonical tag, to tell the search engines which version of a page that you want them to index.
This is particularly useful for shopping cart based websites where products in multiple categories can ... Read More.

While you're busy writing cards, wrapping presents and ordering the turkey it's easy to forget about your website and SEO campaign.
A good SEO agency will constantly review your campaign, making tweaks when required to maximise its performance. But if you haven't re-visited your SEO for a while, the New Year is the perfect time to give it a review. Otherwise the campaign could become more stale than January's mince pies.
Here's 5 ways to freshen things up:
1. Keywords

I was recently running a check on where Vertical Leap appear on local related searches, when I realised that for the terms that had previously displayed a local listings map on the main search engine results page no longer did.
If you aren't quite sure what I mean here, if you search for "restaurants portsmouth" (or another location more relevant to you) and you should be greeted with a map plotting the locations of various restaurants in this area:

Before you ask, I don’t have a crystal ball or understand astrology, however, we live in compelling times and the following post is an attempt to predict what may happen in 2010 in respect of organic search engine optimisation.
The recent appearance of “Realtime Search” for some results in Google is perhaps a sign of things to come as search engines seek innovative ways to incorporate social media comment. Prediction - more to come.
Can we expect another big G... Read More.

I had an irritating 5 minutes this morning trying to work out how a page was redirecting. I had typed in a keywords and was looking at the second hit on the list which didn't have a cached version in the search engine. The page was redirecting... so I switched the meta redirects off in Firefox and turned off javascript too for safe measure. Still redirecting. Checked the HTTP header status.... 200 - nothing funny there. I was about to give up in temporary disgust when my esteemed colleague (che... Read More.

There’s more to ensuring that your website has a good reputation in search engines than on page optimisation. Once you have a website with unique titles tags and meta descriptions the SEO work on your website can move to off page optimisation.
As well optimised website will perform well in the SERPs but a good link building campaign can help this progress.
Once the site is optimised most of the work you will do to help the SEO of your website will be off page optimisation such as link ... Read More.

One of the main aims of SEO is to increase the visibility of your website in the search engines so you get more visitors to your pages from organic search.
However, there may be times when you want to stop some (or maybe all) of your pages from being indexed in the search engine results pages (SERPs).
Maybe parts of your site are duplicated (like ‘print friendly’ pages). Or you might want to stop search results pages from your internal search being indexed.
Here are 3 ways to stop... Read More.

In a new twist in Adwords testing, Google has started to show Ad Sitelinks in the Adwords area of the page. This is a test that they announced back in November http://adwords.blogspot.com/2009/11/increasing-choice-and-relevancy-in.html. Until now, Sitelinks have been an entirely organic phenomenon and it is interesting that Google are testing a paid version in the Adwords area.
As you can see from the screenshot below, the Sitelinks are for the brand site, not for the site that is ranking no1... Read More.

There are many reasons for implementing a website blog such as increasing traffic, building community, becoming an authority and improving ongoing search engine optimisation rankings through targeted content incorporating keyword rich internal links not to mention the ability to attract external links through the distribution of content to many other blogs and websites. Another advantage of a blog is that once it is set up you don’t need to understand html or any other coding language to be ab... Read More.

A few months ago I wrote a blog regarding the adwords beta PlusBox testing, being rolled out to a select few UK adwords advertisers.
Finally Google look to have released the 'PlusBox' functionality as 'Product Extensions' to all US advertisers.
Product extensions allows advertisers to link their adwords account with their merchant centres to display relevant merchant centre listings, images and prices within text ads for the users search query.
Google will continue to charge on a CP... Read More.

It appears that Google is again revising how they show their Local results on the search engine results page (SERP).
Malcolm Coles details a test that he is seeing on Google.com where the map is larger and the number of results is reduced from 7 to 5.
Now, it wasn't really that long ago that they switched from the 10-pack to a 7-pack of results (the beginning of October 2009 in fact), so it is interesting they are playing with it again.
The 10 pack results also started showing in April ... Read More.

There is a new scam email doing the rounds at the moment, which asks you to verify your Google Adwords account details.
In this case, simplicity is the key, and because it isn’t a bank or PayPal, it is perhaps more tempting to click, in which case you get redirected to google-xc.com.

AKA Safe Search on... and Google predictive search off.
In my role as a Campaign Delivery Manager for SEO Campaigns, I find Google predictive search to be really quite useful as a speedy indication for popular keywords and phrases, however when I get home, things are quite different!
My terribly clever 7 year old likes to look things up on the Internet. With all the usual parental fears, I've got Safe Search switched on in her profile and the PC is in a public space with the monitor facing... Read More.
