It’s a frustrating situation, you’ve setup a great PPC campaign for your website, but when you go into your Google Analytics, the figures don’t match with your Adwords…
There are three reasons this might be happening:
1 Does your landing page have a 301 redirect on it? If your adwords campaign is directing visitors to www.yourcompany.com but this redirects to www.yourcompany.com/index.html stats won’t be reported correctly. Removing this 301 redirect, so that the home page shows as www.yourcompany.com could resolve the issue.
2 Are your Analytics and Adwords connected? In Adwords, select my Account and then Account Preferences. Under Analytics select edit and on this screen place a tick in the Auto-Tagging tick box.
3 Are you an administrator with full permissions to both Analytics and Adwords? If not you won’t be able to set up the link between the two. Get full admin permissions for both applications and you are swimming.
Once you have checked these three steps, your Adwords and Analytics should be connected correctly. Remember it can take up to 24 hours for the changes to start showing up in your Analytics.
One final thing to mention is that not all websites will allow you to use the auto-tagging option in Google Adwords, if you think this applies to you, test one of your adverts, if you get an error then auto-tagging won’t work on your site. If this is the case, remove auto tagging and ask your web hosts to enable auto-tagging of your URLs for Google Adwords. Once this functionality is switched on then you can turn auto tagging back on.
