The following is the first set in a series of the most commonly asked questions about Search Marketing. Taken fresh from the lips of the Vertical Leap Sales Team, these queries represent the most frequent misconceptions and misunderstandings that our team face in the Search Marketing sales process.
Why am I #1 when I search but when my friends search for me, they cannot find me?
This is most likely reason is that you may have personalized search by Google set “on”.
If you have this enabled, Google has learned which sites you prefer and so returns these at the top of your results. It’s a great way of really serving your needs, but the downside is not showing general and real time results.
How do you amend it? In the top left there is a little icon that says turn personalised search OFF. Click that and see if that works. If not then sign out of Google in the top right corner before conducting a search. Also make sure that everyone is typing in the word the same way. You’d be surprised how drastically different the results are when searching for a word with or without quotes, with minor spelling changes or even singulars instead of plural.
How long does it take to get indexed by Google?
With a properly optimised website and services of ongoing SEO, Google and the other major search engines can index your website within days or weeks.
In fact with changes to how the algorithm accesses information based on the speed of updates, your site can now be visited several times every day. However, without SEO your website may never rank.
Can we rank for everything in our long list of keywords?
If you are the CEO of Apple or if your site is eBay you probably can.
In all other cases you have to choose and set preferences. You have to determine your primary keywords, select the most important and go after them.
Your main keywords are the most popular and profitable ones and those that are relevant to your target audience. More is not better in this case, If you can be specific you are likely to get better quality customers.
The remainder of your keywords will form the extension of your keyword strategy as agreed with your Search Marketing company.
Don’t forget to stay vigilant! Your keywords may change in importance and you need to ensure that your optimisation partner knows this.
Equally, a good SEO provider will help you by shaping and informing your keyword list with a longtail or attracted keywords strategy.
Can’t I just use WordPress plus plugins for SEO?
You can but it’s not enough on its own. The vast majority of modern CMS and blog software has built in technical SEO capabilities. To outrank others who use mostly SEO friendly software as well you have to do more, if you follow the herd you become part of it. By all means use the integrated software and then take it up a level or two to do more, be more and achieve more for you and your business.
