I've not seen any PageRank changes on any of the domains that I look at regularly, although, it has now been quite some time since the last "official" PageRank update, so we likely are due one (if they don't discontinue it from being visible completely).

On October 23rd we had a pagerank change from 0 to 2 on our blog tus-hasede.blogspot.com. Maybe there has been a small update on that day or there are now just updates of single pages.

I've seen enough instances of changing domains using 301 redirects and retention of rankings to think that 301s do pass something across - but it doesnt seem as much as in the past, and not as consistently.

Hi Malcolm,

Good point - he is specifically talking about cross domain 301 redirects, although I think that this was primarily in response to the way that the question was worded.

However, the wording of his answer:

"I can certainly see how there could be some loss of PageRank. I am not 100 percent sure whether the crawling and indexing team has implemented that sort of natural PageRank decay, so I will have to go and check on that specific case. (Note: in a follow on email, Matt confirmed that this is in fact the case. There is some loss of PR through a 301)."

Whilst he was responding to a question about a particular question about domain 301 redirects, I think the explanation of the answer, and specifically "natural PageRank decay" suggests to me that this is probably the case with 301 redirects.

As always, Matt's answers aren't entirely clear, but I generally take what he says with a generous pinch of salt anyway. In this case however, and based upon my experience of moving pages and domains, I wouldn't be surprised if it applied to both situations.

As usual with Matt's answers, it wasn't quite that clearcut... Sigh. He is specifically talking about cross-domain 301s when he mentions the loss of PR, isn't he? (The question is cross domain, and his answer is about "that specific case")?
