I'm a big fan of Skype - the Voice Over IP (VOIP) provider that was acquired for mega-bucks by EBay not so long ago. In their most recent version of their product (3.1), they have added a new feature / service called SkypeFind.
|
SkypeFind is a business directory of the social networking/media variety - businesses are easily added to the index by users and other people in the "community" can recommend and rate them. As you probably know, local search is predicted to be the "next big thing" and Skype's venture into this market is an interesting twist.
I just tried it and it is very easy use and would certainly recommend it if you are interested in promoting your business to the 15 million or so registered Skype users out there. Getting listed is fast. You simply click on the "Add listing" link and enter a few business details (name, phone, location, keywords, etc). The business does not need actually need to be a Skype user either and so if you have just found a great restaurant or shop, you can recommend it to others via the SkypeFind interface.
One of the neat features that lends itself more to the "social media" side of things is the "Ask your friends" facility. If you are looking for a certain type of business and can't find it in the directory, you can ask your contacts for help (and a link to the public chat facility in Skype is automatically created).
It will be interesting to see how this service is going to be used (or possibly abused). Its accessibility is certainly refreshing and encourages you to participate – but will be open to abuse which ultimately degrade the quality and benefit of this service. Let’s hope not.
So if you are looking for ways to promote your business online, here's another one that may be of use.
