As it’s September 19th it would be remiss of me not to comment on the annual International Talk Like A Pirate Day.
It’s been on the go for 7 years or so, and is good old fashioned childish fun- probably why I love it so much. As talking like a pirate comes quite naturally to me (that’s talking like a pirate NOT writing like one- pirates aren’t renowned as good writers) I can happily blether with the best of them. Maybe it’s something to do with the sea air here… or more likely it’s the rum.
The best thing about talking like a pirate is that it’s funny- FACT.
In fact, why are pirate jokes so funny?- they just ARRR.
Not to be confused with the far less funny farmer joke, which ends with “they just OOO ARR”- see, nowhere near as good.
For any lubbers wanting to extend their piratical linguistics there is a good, if brief, advanced guide- this really should be supplemented with a fuller dictionary otherwise you’ll run the risk of coming across like a bilge-sucker who deserves no more than to have a jolly dance with Jack Ketch.
Interestingly there is some debate as to whether it is more correct to use "Arrr!", "Yarrr!" or "Garrr!" as a statement prefix. Personally I quite like "Garrr!", but it can seem a bit forced unless you use the right tone. I think that’s something probably best left to the experts though.
