Content and Search Engine Optimization
Tue, 17 Jul 2007 17:19:00 by Michelle Smith

When people visit your Web site, they are usually looking for a particular piece of information on your site. They could be looking for a specific product or service that you offer.

Your site has that information but if visitors can not find it easily, they will leave which will result in lost business opportunities. Here are several points to check if your site is user friendly:

  1. What do your customers wish they could find on your Web site?
  2. What bits of information are they looking for?
  3. What products or services do you sell that are difficult to find?

Search Engines

The Search Engines will value the beginning text on your web page as the subject of the content to follow. The content of the page itself is a big part of the equation. Writing from the top down (also known as the "outline method") is the best way to develop new content. Create an outline, using theme keywords and phrases at the top level, and write the content around the page's theme and critical keywords.

Group products together in several different ways, but make sure you do not have all your products lumped together. The key to establishing a theme for your site is to focus on a limited number of keywords and phrases, which are closely related to each other. Your "theme" or benchmark set of keywords and phrases should then be woven into the pages throughout the site, as you develop additional pages to cover each of the more detailed (second tier) search terms on your list. A Search Engine Marketing Firm like Vertical Leap will work with you to optimize your site and pages to help increase your rankings through the Search Engines.
