Eagerly awaiting Apple’s new search engine
6th August 2009 by Matthew Hopkins
For the past year or two, a three-horse race has emerged between Apple, Google, and Microsoft – for most things “tech”.
Browsers – Microsoft had one (IE). Apple created one (Safari). Google now has one too (Chrome).
Mobile Phone Platforms – Microsoft had one (Windows Mobile). Apple created one (iPhone). Google has one now too (Android).
Music and streaming – Apple has led the industry for years with the iPod and iTunes. Microsoft has developed a music device (Zune) and is soon releasing a streaming service to compete with iTunes. Google has YouTube and I would not be surprised to see them either evolve this asset into something more akin to iTunes or see them acquire a service such as Spotify to compete.
Operating Systems – Micrsoft has one (Windows). Apple has one (OSX). Google will be releasing one or two soon (Chrome as an OS or Android – confusing at the moment which is which).
See a trend here?
Microsoft has recently raised its game to compete with Google in Search with the re-brand of its search engine (Bing) and the recent deal with Yahoo.
Google and Apple have recently fallen out with each other due to the expulsion of Google Voice from the App Store. Google’s CEO, Eric Schidmt, recent resigned from Apple’s board.
Personally, I think that Apple would be very successful in search. They have the brand. They have a cult-following of loyal devotees. Providing they get their algorithm right and ensure a decent level of relevancy, they could easily gain 5% of the search market within a few months. I am sure that Apple is aware of this. I would be very, very surprised if Search is not on their strategic radar. And so yes, I am eagerly awaiting Apple’s new search engine and I am not alone.. it’s all about to get interesting.
