Google Launches new site links

17th April 2009 by Emily Mace

Google have been rolling out new ways of displaying site links in the search results.

Site links are the text links that appear under the search results on some searches as shown below.

Old Site Links in Google

Previously these site links were displayed in two columns and were highly visible but only on the first result in the SERPs.

The new one line site links (as shown in the below image) may now appear for more of the search results, not just the first one.  This gives you the chance of having more pages from your website visible in the search results when you are working on your SEO.  We have seen one set of site links which appeared for the 4th result when there were no sitelinks on the top 3 results.

However these links are not as prominent as the old style site links, which did stand out if you had them for one of your number 1 rankings. Although I see the benefit of more people being able to have sitelinks showing on their search engine results I don’t think the benefit of these new site links will be as strong for websites, as rather than jumping out at your potential visitors they are really only visible on the second look at the search results.

Don’t forget to use Google Webmaster Tools to remove site links you don’t want to show on your website ranking – such as the contact us page or your privacy policy.
