Google's OneBox
Fri, 2 Mar 2007 08:35:11 by Matt Hopkins

Most people are aware of the two main areas on Google?s search engine results pages ? the natural or organic listings shown in the main body of the page on the left-hand side and the ?paid for?  or sponsored listings down the right (and sometimes in a box at the top).

There is actually a third area on Google?s pages that should show on any search engine marketing campaign?s radar ? the OneBox.

The OneBox is that area at the top of the page that Google places in results if it thinks it has something extra relevant to your search ? it may be products from Google Base, or local businesses from Google Maps, news from Google News, etc.  It is the section identified with the letter ?H? in the image below:

As you can imagine ? this is a great location to find yourself listed in - and it is not impossible to achieve.  If you are an online retailer ? you can make sure that your products are in Google Base.   You could also add your business to the local listings in Google Maps (see previous post on this topic).

It only takes a bit of effort on your part ? but everything worth having usually does (especially when it comes to search engine optimisation).
