Little Used Ways to Boost Your Website Traffic

Because Christmas is coming, I thought I would offer a few ways to increase traffic to your website. For business to business sites, December is a quiet month as people put off decisions and searches until next year. This makes this a good time to take stock and put some extra marketing effort in to capture that New Year interest.  For some consumer sites, particularly services and travel, the same applies.

These are not all ways of attracting new visitors, but encouraging those who have already been to your site before to return. As they are familiar with your brand, they should be favourably inclined.

This also helps the sales process – it takes on average 7 contacts to make a sale, and many of these techniques help make those ‘touches’

  1. Google Subscribed links. Great if you have a content based site.
  2. Google Shopping (was Froogle/Google Product Search etc). Many new terms have been added recently, so even if your products didn’t have Google Shopping results, they might now.
  3. RSS Feeds – so many people don’t employ them, but they are a great way of getting people to add your content to an interface they visit often, and you can ‘push’ information at them.
  4. Email marketing – get an instant boost when you send out an email newsletter. Start collecting opt-in email addresses now. It is amazing how many website owners don’t offer a subscription box on their website.
  5. Blogging. Start a blog; use quiet times to plan the content, so that at the busy times you know already what you are going to post about. If you are already blogging, use the time to pre-prepare some blogs in advance.
  6. Have a good through look at your own website. Check that the forms submit, that the internal searches work and other housekeeping. Fix your broken links, validate your site with Google Webmaster Tools and see if it gives you any site integrity issues you need to fix.
