For those who don’t know (and why would you, really?) comScore is an Internet information provider of consumer behavior insight. They released a report yesterday that covers the growth of mobile search.
I’m not normally a fan of stats for the sake of stats, but these mobile search findings indicate a shift in usage trends- especially here in the UK. Rather than simply "more people using mobile search", it is apparent that "more people use mobile search, more often", pointing towards a more exponential type of growth.
In the last year mobile subscribers (where a mobile subscriber = an active SIM card) accessing search services has grown from 7.7% to 9.5% in the UK. Compared with France at 4.7% and Germany at 3.7% we in the UK are mobile search crazy.
According to comScore, Google is the mobile search engine of choice, with a 60% market share- unsurprising when you look at the ease of use of their mobile search platform and their powerful branding, but still less than for desktop search (where compete.com estimate that they hold a 70.4% share).
The implication of these findings are profound- if you don’t have a mobile-friendly website there is more and more evidence to suggest that, for the appropriate markets, you might be missing a trick.
Further, if you have a mobile site and it hasn’t been SEO‘d you’ll find it hard to stake a claim in a growing market- which these days is a rare beast.
