| New search engines could Google be challenged? |
| Tue, 05 May 2009 by Emily Mace In recent weeks two new UK search engines have been announced amid much fan fare. Wolfram Alpha, has been spoken about for some time but is now being tested and is set to launch in another few months. The Wolfram Alpha project is aimed at addressing some of the perceived issues with other search engines including the ability to answer questions directly, having understood what was meant and using a mathematical and scientific engine. April saw the launch of the Oparla engine. This new search engine is focussed on turning search on its head by paying users when they search. However with Hitwise data showing the one of the most commonly searched for terms on Yahoo being Google it is unlikely that these other engines will make much of a dent in the level of the market share Google holds. When search engines first came about there was only a small search marketing, whereas in recent years the growth in the search market has seen some of the smaller engines (such as Altavista,) fall by the wayside, with Google taking over the search market, even from people like Yahoo, so there is unlikely to be much impact on the search engine optimisation of your website. |
