There are a lot of unscrupulous companies out there offering phony or weak SEO services and ultimately ripping off their clients. For those of us who are trying to contribute to making this industry professional and ethical, it is a source of great frustration.
I came across this posting on Search Engine Watch today - highlighting the arrest of the CEO of one of the more infamous SEO companies - TrafficPower. This is one of the few search marketing companies that has been "named and shamed" formally by Google and had all of its pages and all of the pages of its customers' websites banned from the Google index (along with Yahoo,MSN, and the rest).
I don't know anything about the current trouble Matt Marlon is in, but it seems that his scamming was not limited to the search industry.
It does, however, highlight the need for prospective buyers of SEO services to be cautious. There are a lot of companies out there offering what appear to be legitimate services, but just because they seem to be saying the right thing on their web site does not mean that they are doing the right thing.
