SEO Speak: Backlinks, inlinks and the backlink profile

Backlinks or In Links are important to your website’s performance in search engines but what are they and why do they work?

Backlinks are links to your site from other sites on the internet. Your website’s backlink profile shows the number of links and their potential value to your website. 

It is important when creating links from other sites to your website to consider some of the following factors:

  1. Linking from “splogs” or spam blogs, set up with duplicate content and hundreds of links won’t help you one bit
  2. Using keywords as anchor text rather than the company name or URL can increase the reputation of your website in search engines – if you have done SEO on your site, you should already by number 1 for your company name and URL.
  3. Links from high quality websites will help you more than low quality sites and links from sites Google doesn’t even know about won’t help you at all.
  4. Don’t just link build to the homepage of your site, links should go to relevant pages on the site for the keyword you are using as anchor text – for example if you run an online sports shop don’t link the Nike Women’s Trainers keyword to the homepage, link it to the Nike Women’s Trainers page – it’s the one that is most relevant to that keyword!
  5. Don’t buy links – Google doesn’t approve of bought links and recommends against them in their webmaster Guidelines.
  6. Try and create a “natural” link profile and not one that is too heavily loaded with reciprocal links or 3 way links.
  7. Avoid link schemes – they will only hurt your site
