I was just reading an interesting post over at SEO Scientist today that analyses the various studies that have been done over the years on search user behaviour. Of particular note was this graph:
It shows the percentage of people who click on a search result for each position in the top 10. It compares these percentages from the four sets of research (2004, 2005, 2006 and 2008).
First, it seems that the #2 and #3 position has become a bit more important compared with previous years. But it will be no surprise that the top three positions dominate click through rate (CTR) with 85% of all clicks.
To me, this clearly illustrates the importance of getting top 3 results for decent long tail search terms – rather than spending all effort to get a high traffic term to a result close to, but not within in the top 3.
