Search Sponsored Links - How to review competing Google Adwords ads (PPC)

Did you know that Google offers the capability to view all adverts currently active for specific keywords in Adwords?   Its a great tool to see both how competitive a certain phrase is and to review the types of messages that are being used by others.

There's two ways that you can get to this capability:

1. Click on the "More sponsored links" link at the bottom of the ads being displayed on Google

2. Go to this link - www.google.com/sponsoredlinks


From here, you can enter your keywords and see an indication of the number of competing ads... for example, the are about 319 ads available for the keyword in the example above.  So this is a fairly interesting view of all ads that Google would consider showing for a particular keyword.

Note that the order in which these are displayed are different from the main Google algorithm.  In fact, Google's help page states that:

  • The ranking algorithm is different from the main listings.
  • Clicks and impressions by these ads aren't reported in your account.
  • Advertisers are not charged for any clicks that result from these ads.
  • Ads are not filtered for changes in language preferences.
  • Ads shown include those that have already met the daily budget for that day.
This is not something that you will use frequently, but certainly a useful feature to be aware of.
