Here's your Thursday morning thought of the day - in the television show Heroes , a professor is able to track down people who are experiencing genetic mutations giving them "special powers" by searching a database held by the Human Genome Project. Pretty far fetched - right?
Well perhaps this is they type of new search that Google is planning to offer in the not so distant future.
E-commerce Times is reporting that Google has just invested in a Genetics company owned by Google co-founder Sergey Brin's wife. The company (23andMe) is trying to "allow individuals to gain deeper insights into their ancestry, genealogy and inherited traits".
Obviously this would raise some interesting issues around the search syntax - "who else shares my same ancestor?" or "who else is like me"? Which may be too risky a question as chimpanzees apparently have only one chromosome different from humans.. but perhaps the larger questions relate to our own industry and how we would offer optimisation services for such a search engine... perhaps we better start planning for the arrival of Genetic Engine Optimisation (GEO)?
