I have previously written about how 3 way link exchanges are being abused.
I’ve recently come across another instance of a similarly unethical technique – sending out link request emails promising that you will link back, and then never doing it.
Whilst reciprocal linking isn’t a large part of any link strategy these days, sending out this kind of request is just mean. It encourages people to link to you, and then they have to do all the work of chasing up the link and then removing it again when nothing is heard back. And how many companies never get around to doing the removal? How many nice incoming links do they have just because someone never got around to double checking?
It is possible that these emails are not deliberately duplicitous; they could just be overlooked, but the fact that some companies seem to appear to be doing this more than once does raise the question… However, it is not quite as blatant as the recent discovery of a reciprocal link cloaking scam which is very definitely an attempt to deceive.
No wonder it is difficult for people to choose an SEO company; once you start researching, picking an agency is a daunting prospect.
