Writing Press Releases for Off-Page Optimisation
Thu, 6 Sep 2007 09:49:36 by Kerry Dye

One of the things that we always recommend to our clients is that if they write press releases, then it is (a) a good way to get new fresh content and (b) we can distribute them for additional SEO opportunities.

Whilst it is important that your press release contains some of your key phrases, given that you are writing about your own company, this is a fairly natural thing that will happen. So whilst writing you can refer to your keyword list, but don't agonise about getting all of them in.

Of course, getting started on a press release is one of the things that many people find difficult. It's that "staring at a blank piece of paper" feeling! So here are a few ideas to get your creative juices flowing on what you could write a press release about:

  1. New staff joining
  2. Move of office
  3. Good sales month
  4. New client / renewing client
  5. Comment on an industry report that has just been released
  6. Charity activity, either for the company or a staff member
  7. Starting an eco-friendly process e.g. office recycling
  8. Good results in a marketing campaign (e.g. search engine optimisation?)
  9. Appointing a supplier
  10. Attendance at a trade show/conference (before going to advertise presence or afterwards if you had a good response)

There are specialist services who will write your press releases for you, and distribute them. So if you have a good subject for a press release but feel that you really don't have the writing skils then consider hiring a copywriter or a specialist SEO press release writer who will translate your brief.

Whichever way you go about it, having PR out there about you helps, whether it's assisting the search engines to find you, or helping a potential employee find out more about the company or a sales prospect looking for background information on you. So get writing!
