Yahoo turns 14 – how times have changed in search engine optimisation

We’ve talked recently about how search engine optimisation has changed in the last year and the move towards Google as the primary search engine used by people on the internet.

Well, this week sees Yahoo turn 14.  When Yahoo was first incorporated in 1995 the internet was a really new creature and the advent of Yahoo was something quite big.

The original Yahoo was very much a directory site, the below shot shows the homepage of Yahoo back then.  Yahoo was used as a method of finding sites by category and less by keyword search term.

Yahoo has changed a lot in the last 14 years and has developed many other services, such as Yahoo Instant Messenger, Yahoo Buzz  (which also turns 1 this week) and the image sharing site Flickr.

Over the last year there has been a lot of talk about Yahoo being bought out by Microsoft, who are looking to increase their market share of the search industry.  However, in January of this year Yahoo appointed a new CEO, Carol Bartz, who was bought in as a hard hitting answer to some of Yahoo’s problems.

Whatever the future holds for Yahoo – Happy 14th Birthday!
