I really wanted the title to be “Alexa is not an entirely pointless waste of space used solely by SEO peeps” but thought that might be a bit long.
Snappy title yes? Or no. There are reasons why I got into computing rather than say journalism. But back to the point…
I happened to have a bit of spare time whilst waiting for a report to generate this afternoon and thought I’d have a read of the Geocities stuff that’s been going on this week. I went to the Geocities page and found that once again the Internet Archive has come to the rescue and has worked hard to archive as much of Geocities as possible.
I followed this around a bit to find what the usual criteria are for including a site within the Internet Archive and was rather surprised to find that it’s a direct result of being recognised by Alexa – either via Alexa Webmasters page or by being visited by a browser with the Alexa toolbar installed. I’m sure I must have known this at some point but the little grey cells can’t always keep hold of all the information.
Following on from Emily’s post a couple of days ago where she discusses why Alexa data isn’t a good indicator of internet traffic (which I agree with incidentally) – I just thought I’d give them a little vote of confidence. And for anyone who wants a laugh – look this is my first website…
