High Profile websites get hacked

Matt wrote a blog last month about Hack Sites  and the trend for SEO  hacks and Kerry wrote about Hackers not defacing sites any longer in May.

This week has seen activity on the web that stresses to us all how important it is to spot when a website is hacked so that it can be resolved as soon as possible.  There has been a lot of talk in the media about the hack of Twitter and the fact that Twitter has been down as a result of the size of attack that they have suffered.  The BBC News website also reported that Facebook and Google had also suffered from large attacks. According to the BBC Google were able to defend its sites against the attacks.

It may be tempting to think that if the hackers are going after Google, Facebook and Twitter then your website will be safe, not so as these high profile attacks show us how important it is to ensure that your website is as protected as possible.  Large Companies such as Twitter, Google and Facebook are more likely to have higher levels of security due to their size so if they are vulnerable to attack then so might you be.

As we’ve mentioned in previous blogs there are a number of things you can do to check if your website has been hacked including a free tool to check external links from your site, which will help you to monitor if someone has tried to add links from your website to another one.

As Matt mentioned last month one key thing to implement on your site is to ensure your FTP access is restricted by IP address, this will stop people outside the IP addresses you have allowed onto the FTP server from gaining access.
