How Do I Know If Google Has Seen My Website Changes?

Straightforward SEO stuff this. Sometimes one of my campaigns makes a change to their website and they want to know why Google is apparently paying no attention to the changes. They might add a new page for example but not seem to be able to find it for any search query or they change the text on the home page but can’t find that page for any search string.

If you want to see the version of your site as Google currently sees it then a really quick way is the “site:” operator. Simply go to Google and in the search box type “site:www.myexample.co.uk” – and you will see all the pages from your site that Google has indexed. If you want to see if Google has indexed a new page type “site:www.myexample.co.uk/newpage.html” – and if Google returns no results then you know that Google is not currently indexing it.

If you have made changes to a page and you want to see if Google has currently seen them then do a site search as above and then look at the search results – click on the word “cached” and this will show you the version of your homepage that Google currently knows about – if you look up at the top of this cached page you will also see the date and time that Google saw the snapshot – this is a useful indicator of how frequently Google revisits your site.
