Keyword research is essential in just about all successful SEO campaigns.
By discovering what potential users and customers are searching for, you can market your website better in the search engines. And by extending that research further than just finding out about the most popular search terms, you can get your website ranking well and delivering traffic.
Identifying products
But keyword research isn’t just about SEO. It can also help you identify new and trending niches in your market that haven’t already been covered by other suppliers.
For example, a few years ago, an online cake shop discovered that lots of couples were searching for ‘chocolate wedding cakes’. And their keyword research found that there was very little competition for this phrase in the search engines.
So after some further offline research, they amended their business plan and began to sell chocolate wedding cakes via their online shop, optimising their site accordingly.
Now of course, chocolate wedding cakes are extremely popular and there are many bakeries and shops that sell them, both on the high street and online.
But, by identifying a new trend in the market via their keyword research, the site is now well placed in the search engines for highly competitive phrases based around ‘chocolate wedding cakes’.
Obviously keyword research is only the one part of identifying gaps in the market and possible new products. But it’s very useful in helping you understand your market and customers.
