I Love View-Source

I had an irritating 5 minutes this morning trying to work out how a page was redirecting. I had typed in a keywords and was looking at the second hit on the list which didn’t have a cached version in the search engine.

The page was redirecting… so I switched the meta redirects off in Firefox and turned off javascript too for safe measure. Still redirecting. Checked the HTTP header status…. 200 – nothing funny there. I was about to give up in temporary disgust when my esteemed colleague (cheers Pete) joined my battle and came up with the remarkably useful view-source command. In the URL bar (works for me in Firefox and Chrome but not IE) type “view-source:http:www.vertical-leap.co.uk” and hurrah – you can see what is going on in the source code. In this instance, the extremely sneaky site was using a flash redirect to cloak the text content page and redirect to a page full of images.

I like it when I can add new tricks to my SEO check list!
