I am amazed by how many awful title tags are around – I keep finding websites with hugely long titles or with titles like “Home” or even more apalling, no title at all – “untitled page”. Then there are the titles which prominently feature the company name all over the website.
Here are my 6 top tips for creating an SEO friendly title tag…
- Keep it short – around 70 characters is plenty.
- Target 3 keyphrases maximum
- Don’t repeat keywords otherwise it looks like keyword stuffing
- Leave out stopwords as they dilute the strength of the keywords in the title and take up valuable space. Use pipes or hypens instead.
- Stick your main keyword at the front of the title tag – if you must have your company name, stick it at the end.
- Don’t duplicate your title tags throughout the site.
