Search Engine Christmas Number 1s 2010

So, it’s that time of year again, when we look at the number 1 results in the “major” search engines, something we have looked at in 2007, 2008 and 2009 previously.

In the past we have seen in 2007 the results were as follows:

  • Google.co.uk – www.northpole.com
  • Yahoo – Wikipedia
  • MSN – Encarta Encyclopedia

In 2008, there were some slight changes:

  • Google.co.uk – Wikipedia
  • Yahoo – Wikipedia
  • Live (MSN) – Surviving Credit Crunch at Christmas Video

Results for 2009 were:

  • Google.co.uk – Wikipedia
  • Yahoo – Wikipedia
  • Bing (MSN) – Wikipedia

So, 2010? – Boringly, Wikipedia ranks with the top normal listings, with the same page, so this year, let’s look at how the search engines each handles the “generic” nature of the search term.

Google clearly think that you should be search for something else, as they trigger “related searches” for “christmas decorations”, “christmas gifts” & “christmas shopping”.

Bing has some News results about travellers facing difficulties due to cut rail services and icy roads, and some pretty Christmas imagery with some image search results.

Yahoo has links to the Yahoo Christmas websites, supplying links to gift ideas, decorations as well as some New Year’s Eve’s ideas, and a Video of Christmas with Yahoo.

All in all, I think Bing and Yahoo’s efforts on their results for this term are much more interesting than Google’s!
