Search Tips for Parents

AKA Safe Search on… and Google predictive search off.

In my role as a Campaign Delivery Manager for SEO Campaigns, I find Google predictive search to be really quite useful as a speedy indication for popular keywords and phrases, however when I get home, things are quite different!

My terribly clever 7 year old likes to look things up on the Internet. With all the usual parental fears, I’ve got Safe Search switched on in her profile and the PC is in a public space with the monitor facing the room.

I keep finding her reading the most peculiar pages and wonder how on earth she has wound up there – and then I remembered that she has Google’s predictive search enabled so for example, when she is looking up “How To make Jelly” she gets the following offering…

…and gets sidetracked into entirely irrelevant and occasionally unsuitable pages.

Whilst not being earth shattering news, I just thought I might mention how to turn it off for anyone else in a similar position! In the Google toolbar, click the spanner at the right end (the settings buttons) and unselect “Suggest searches as you type”.

This switches it off in the tool bar but you also need to turn it off within the website too so navigate to Google and select “Search Settings” and select “Do not provide query suggestions in the search box”.
