SEO Rubbishness Of Some Commercial Sites

Ranting time.

Gosh. Sometimes even now I find that the degree of rubbishness of some commercial sites is astonishing. At the weekend we were desperately trying to find some reference to a construction toy kit which a kind friend has donated to us. I was hoping to find a website about it so that I could show my daughter. We had a slight issue, in that we couldn’t remember the name of the product – however we could think of lots of good descriptive phrases to search under – absolutely no luck. When we eventually got hold of the site via some guesswork as to what the name of the product might be and a little help from their PPC campaign (because they don’t even rank highly for their own product name) – we found the site.

I expect it’s probably bad form to reveal the actual URL of the site I am talking about – but it’s a site about an “award winning construction toy kit”. I think I’m pretty safe in using that quote without it being obvious who I’m talking about because the only place I can see that text on the site is in a *.gif. Not just any old *.gif either – it’s a *.gif with a meaningless name and whilst it does have text in its alt tag – it’s also meaningless.

The homepage itself has only 84 words of body text, almost none of which would help to a search query. No header tags, No Meta description and the Title only contains the URL of the website.

The site is powered by a particular shopping cart who I remember having isues with in the past too… but again, naming no names.

PPC is obviously a good complementary strategy – no arguments there – but these site could soooo easily rank for it’s keywords it’s ridiculous. Get yourself some SEO chaps!
