Google have answered a question today on their Google Webmaster YouTube Channel regarding the use of Pipes (|) and Dashes (-) in Title Tags. This is similar to the recent blog we wrote about the use of Dashes and Underscores in URLs
This is something which some people have asked before regarding the Title Tag on pages of a website. So according to Google should you use Pipes or Dashes as a separator in these title tags?
Well both these characters are seen as being separators by Google so there will be little effect in terms of the way that your page is ranked in Google no matter which of these you choose to use.
Matt Cutts did mention that there might be a small amount of impact in terms of the number of visitors who click on a page title from Google’s SERPs which have a pipe compared to a dash. However, this is something Google recommend A/B testing to see if this is the case as many users on the web probably won’t notice.
The most important things to remember with your Title Tags is that from an SEO point of view they should all be unique, they should not be spammy and contain loads of keywords and that they should be relevant to the copy on your page.
It’s also important to remember that when people search for you in Google the page title is the first thing they get to see of your website so it’s worth looking into making these title tags attractive to users and so they should contain key points that make you stand out from the crowd. Title tags which don’t inform users about your services won’t help you get visits to your website and so won’t help you get more conversions.
