SEARCH MARKETING BLOG

So you’ve got a blog, now what?

Well a blog is important for the SEO of your website so the “now what” is important.

Why Blogs Help your SEO

Blogs create new content on your site

Blogs using a blogging tool such as Blogger automatically ping websites like Google and Technorati when a new post is put onto the website, meaning that new items on your site are being seen by people like Google as soon as they are posted.

In each blog try to use a keyword in the copy, this can be either one from your keyword list or once form the long-tail keywords currently driving traffic.  From this keyword you can link to a relevant page on your site – so if you have a page dedicated to Bedding Plants and you use this as a keyword in your blog, make sure you link from the words Bedding Plants to your dedicated page.

The combination of new content and the pinging of this content to sites like Google delivers the message to search engines that your website is constantly changing and does not contain stale information.  Add to this the links from your blog to pages on your site and you are proving how relevant your website is to your industry. This will help you rank better for your keywords.

So how often should I blog

We generally say to people that at least once a week shows the search engines regular updates are taking place and that you are an authority on your topic.  Try to keep your blogging to a regular interval and don’t post 5 blogs one week and none for a month following this, as it won’t help you look like an authority.  If you have lots of blog ideas in one week, write them all and save them for posting at regular intervals rather than all at once.

But what should I blog about?

In June I posted about using the news to create blog topics and we’ve also the use of long tail keywords from your traffic logs.

But how do you use this information?

Well there are a number of good techniques for turning these into blog topics.

Firstly remember people like tips and tricks so consider using your chosen keyword or news item to create headings like:

  • Top tricks to get the most from XXX
  • Top Ten Tips for choosing a XXX

If you are using a news item, consider writing a blog based around a company response, or tips resulting from this news item such as: “How you can beat <>” or “Making the most of <>”

Remember you blog can serve your company website in many ways, from providing regular content updates to an increase in your internal linking structure. So the answer to the burning question “I’ve got a blog, now what?” is keep blogging!
