Top Three Title Tag Tips

Whilst it’s important to have great content on a website, without SEO, or other forms of marketing, it can be difficult for people to find said content.
Assuming good content is already in place, then the title tag is the most important on-page factor that an SEO is able to manipulate in terms of the weight it has in a web pages ability to rank.
Here are my top 3 tips for maximising title tags across your website.
1) Use keywords in your title tag – it’s important to identify phrases that you want people to find you with – do a bit of research, perhaps with free tools such as the Google AdWords traffic estimation tool to identify phrases that people are looking for related to your business. Then identify pages on your website that are relevant to these phrases, and ensure that you use these keywords in those titles tags.
2) Use the most important keywords at the start of the title tag – it’s everso common to see a website companies name at the start of the title tag – but unless this is the most important phrase that you should be ranking for, this isn’t making the most of your title tag. The words that appear at the front of a title tag are given the greatest weight, and through the domain name, and natural links that your website accrues, your website should already be ranking for your company name.
It can often be better to use the company name at the end of a title tag rather than the start, as this retains your branding, whilst freeing up optimisation real estate at the start of your title tags.
3) Make sure every page uses a different title tag – this is probably the most common issue that I see with title tags when new clients come to us. It seems to be a default for lots of web designers to create a website that has the same title tag across the website.
This tag in essence helps to tell search engines what to expect on the pages of your website, and by giving them the same infomation about all pages on your website, you reduce the chances of any of them ranking.
Whilst there is a lot more to SEO than just title tags, following these 3 steps if you aren’t already should give you a kickstart for your websites visibility.
