Ways to review your SEO campaign for 2010

While you’re busy writing cards, wrapping presents and ordering the turkey it’s easy to forget about your website and SEO campaign.

A good SEO agency will constantly review your campaign, making tweaks when required to maximise its performance. But if you haven’t re-visited your SEO for a while, the New Year is the perfect time to give it a review. Otherwise the campaign could become more stale than January’s mince pies.

Here’s 5 ways to freshen things up:

1. Keywords

  • Are keywords that are ranking well actually driving sufficient traffic?
  • Are your keywords still in line with your overall goals?
  • Are there any new keywords or search trends for you to consider?
  • Are rankings for your keywords achievable?

Remember that SEO needs time to show the best results. But don’t be scared to change your keywords if required.

2. On-site optimisation

This is usually the first stage of an SEO campaign. But it’s easy to ignore once the campaign is up and running.

Make sure you review your on-site optimisation regularly:

  • Do you need to change title tags and meta-descriptions?
  • Is your robots.txt and site maps up-to-date?
  • Can you use more internal links?
  • Do you need to update any content or anchor text?
  • What’s changed in search – does your on-site optimisation need to reflect those changes?

If you’re worried about affecting your rankings, make changes in small steps – then you can easily monitor any changes across the search engines.

3. Link building

If you’re including link building as part of your campaign:

  • Do you need to try new tactics or methods?
  • Are the sites you are targeting for links still relevant?
  • Have you made any good relationships with other sites in 2009? Do they link to you? If not, get a link!

4. Natural links

Use your analytics package to look at referring websites.

Are they linking to the most relevant pages on your site? If not, get in touch and ask them to correct it. You’ll be doing them a favour too.

5. Content and blogs

Search engines love content and blogs:

  • Can you add more content to your site?
  • Can you write more blogs?
  • How far have you come in 2009? Are there any opportunities for guest blogs on other websites?

Once of the most common excuses for a lack of content and blogs is lack of resources. See how your routine has changed:

  • Could you write a short blog on the commute into the office?
  • Have you invested in an iPhone or laptop? Use it to make notes on a blog post or new content while you’re on the move.

Look to 2011 and beyond
