Following on from Tom’s blog on Friday giving 3 quick tips on writing search-friendly content I thought I’d write a bit about why the content of your website is important for SEO.
As Tom said it is important to ensure that your content is natural and varied as Search engine pick up on content that looks forced or contrived to include too many keyword references. However it is important to have content on your site that does cover your core offerings.
The content on your website serves two purposes. Firstly, the content of your site acts as a sales pitch to potential customers – use the content on each page of your website to sell your services and products, detailing the WOW points and what makes your site better than others out there. Secondly, from the search engine’s point of view having around 300 words of copy about each product or service on your site will help prove that you are relevant to this product, whereas if you only have 10 words on a page, this level of relevancy won’t be there.
If your website is a shopping cart the use of content becomes more of an issue. Your ecommerce website might have hundreds of products on it, so it might be tempting to revert to only having 10-15 words of copy on each product page. However, consider the above two points about this copy – the sales pitch and the relevancy message. 10-15 words might not be enough to convince a potential customer to choose you over your competitors and it won’t be enough for Google to see you as relevant for search terms relating to the items you are selling. Shopping cart websites in particular can have thousands of keywords driving traffic to them each month and providing a good level of content for each of your products can really help you appear for more of these keywords in Google’s SERPs. Although some of these long tail keywords won’t have very high search volumes per month being visible for hundreds of these terms could potentially provide you with hundreds of extra visitors.
Content is not the only factor that will lead to your website ranking well and getting lots of visitors but it is important to ensuring that all the other aspects of your search engine optimisation have a strong website to rely on. Having good content on your website will support all of your link building and content marketing activities.
