Apple Store sees 10 billionth app downloaded

A woman in Kent has unwittingly become the person who downloaded the 10 billionth Apple app.

On their website, content generation specialists Apple announced “more than 10 billion apps have been downloaded from our revolutionary App Store by more than 160 million iPhone, iPod touch and iPad users worldwide.”

Gail Davis, from Orpington, told the BBC that “It wasn’t actually [my] download, it was my daughter’s. I had no idea, when Apple called me.”

Unaware that Apple had launched a ‘countdown to ten billion’ campaign, Ms Davis thought the call was a prank and refused to take it. Luckily, Apple called back and are awarding Gail with an i-Tunes gift card worth £6,200 ($10,000).

What was the all important app Ms Davis’s daughter downloaded? It was a free app developed by British company Neon Play called Paper Glider, a game where users control a paper plane.

The Apple Store opened in July 2008, accessed via iTunes and offers more than 350,000 different apps to users across the globe.

The launch of the iPad generated the largest download increase. Forbes maintains that ‘apps for iPhone, iPad and iPod constitute only around 2% of our price estimate for Apple’s stock,’ which they approximate is worth $418 per share. 70% of revenue generated by app downloads goes back to the developers.
