Bing personalises AutoSuggest

Bing’s autosuggest feature is to offer personalised query suggestions based on search history, thanks to improvements made last week.

Personalised search is a hot topic in search engine optimisation, with many of Google’s recent changes seen as potentially disrupting standard SEO services. However, Microsoft’s incorporation of personalisation seems likely to attract less ire.

This is because the auto-suggest feature has little impact on organic results. In fact such an improvement could actually be of benefit to SEO and search engine marketing campaigns; as the official Bing blog says, “many search tasks span multiple search sessions – even [over] days or weeks”

“44% of non-navigational sessions last longer than 1 week…you might use Bing to find a retail location and to further research online – over many days – to make the best decisions on your big ticket purchase. With history support in Autosuggest, you can restart a previous search session by typing a few characters to see your previous queries and start researching right where you left off.”

Unlike Google’s autosuggest, Bing’s feature will display previously visited queries in a different colour. This addition may increase the effectiveness of targeting long-tail search queries for SEO, as users build upon previously used search queries in a search for more information.
