Bing rises in market share

Microsoft’s search engine Bing’s US market share has seen a rise, according to a new report by comScore. The report saw Bing’s market share increase to 10.7 percent in December, rising by 0.4 percent since November.

Bing was launched last June, and has since steadily moved up the market share ladder, thanks to Microsoft’s $100 million advertising campaign launched in order to compete with search engine giant, Google. Though it still has a fair way to go yet if they want to beat Google, as they have a market share of 65.7 percent.

In a bid to win over consumers, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer had announced in the Consumer Electronic Show that all laptops and desktops sold by Hewlett-Packard in 42 countries will have Bing as their default search engine.

An agreement between Yahoo and Microsoft will see a 10-year web search and advertising partnership. This will begin in July and Yahoo will use Microsoft’s search engine, Bing, on its own sites

ComScore reported that search engine Yahoo saw a decrease in its market share for the third month running. It’s search engine market share fell to 17.3 percent in December, compared to 17.5 percent the month previous. At the same time, Ask.com fell from 3.8 percent down to 3.7 percent, and the market share of AOL has dropped to 2.6 percent from its previous share of 2.8 percent.
