Facebook blocks Twitter app

Social networking and content generation site Facebook is reportedly blocking users from finding out which of their friends also have Twitter accounts.

Rival site Twitter updated its Facebook app, allowing users to see which of their friends use the services of both sites, however, this feature seems to have been suddenly disabled.

Arguments are raging as to whether Facebook has disallowed Twitter to collect data from its site, with a Twitter spokesman cited in ITProPortal as saying: ”Facebook has notified us that they have blocked the update to our application and we are working on a resolution with them.”

Facebook failed to comment on whether it had taken such action, simply saying to The Telegraph: ”We are working with Twitter to resolve the issue,” with more information on the issue expected later today on the reasons for the block and anticipated time of resolution.

Despite Twitter having a smaller following than Facebook, the site has been growing at a rapid rate. Founder and chief executive of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg commented only yesterday that his site is targeting 1 billion users, attempting to overtake the growth rate of its rival. Introducing a status update akin to Tweets after failing to acquire Twitter in 2008, it appears that Facebook is worried about being overtaken as the top social networking site.
