Google looking to test its ‘Newspass’ paywall service

Online news providers are taking notice as reportedly, Google is searching for publishers to test its impending paywall service, dubbed ‘Newspass’.

According to ITProPortal, Italian publication La Repubblica is reporting that the search engine marketing specialists are looking to move their news content marketing service forwards, connecting with publishers to test the water for a trial run.

Newspass will allow consumers to use one single login to access the sites of co-operating news publishers. Such publishers will be allowed to set their own payment set-ups, including the use of subscriptions. The Guardian reports that Google users will be presented with a special paywall icon beside specific content and will be able to pay for this news content through Google’s own checkout system.

Despite the changes, Google News will still show free-content alongside the new paid-for content, giving users a choice on which content they would like to digest.

A Google statement cited in ITProPortal comments on the changes, saying: ”We’ve consistently said we’re talking with news publishers about ways we can work together, including whether we can help them with technology to power any subscription services they may be thinking of building. Our aim, as with all Google products, is to reach as broad a global audience as possible.”

Although, the company continued by saying it had ”nothing specific to announce at this time.”

With The Times and Sunday Times implementing a paywall system and the rise of technology such as the iPad, it is of significance that Google is choosing to explore a ”Newspass” option at this time.
