Google nets biggest share of mobile search engine market

The latest stats from data intelligence agency Opera reveals that Google’s success in the traditional search market is being mirrored in the mobile market.

Opera’s “State of the Mobile” report shows that Google searches account for “more than 9% of all page views on the mobile Web.”

These figures are based on the number of phones using the Opera web browser application. Approximately 100 million smartphones and mobile phones are estimated to have shipped with Opera pre-installed and it is also the only web browser available for the Nintendo DS and Wii gaming systems.

According to the figures Opera Mini (the version for mobile phones) was used by 50 million people in January 2010.  Meanwhile Yahoo continues in its established second-place position for search with a share of 4.3%; the surprising figure however is the share of Microsoft’s Bing. This was just 0.03% of the smartphone and mobile internet market – one three hundredth of Google’s share.

These statistics reveal that search engine marketing for mobile users is a similar business to traditional search – but that competition is even lower. Google continues to dominate the market in terms of audience, possibly due to its existing partnership with Apple to power the iPhone search features. Also, given the extra AdWords support for mobile campaigns that has been introduced over the past few months, Google seems likely to remain a firm favourite for PPC advertising as well.

Recently Google’s chief executive Eric Schmidt announced that the company’s programmers would be focusing on “mobile first” during a keynote speech at the Mobile World Congress.
