Google tests webmasters on their SEO skills

Google’s Webmaster central blog is challenging its readers to take part in a quiz to test their skills.

The quiz has no prize and is “just for fun” but offers webmasters the opportunity to test their knowledge. Whilst not specifically aimed at testing their search engine optimisation skills, many of the topics covered are fundamental to on-page SEO. The team has “tried to come up with questions and answers that reflect recurring concerns in the forum and some information that may not be well known”.

For example, there will be questions on how to build search-engine-friendly sites and diagnosing issues that sites might experience with the Google algorithms. Testing how you can overcome problems with a websites crawling, indexing or ranking in the Google search engine is a good test of SEO fundamentals. The quiz is certain to test webmaster skills on how to use sitemaps to tell Google about pages that might not be discovered otherwise and how to make the most of them for SEO purposes.

The quiz is available from today until Wednesday the 27th of January, closing at 1700 Pacific Standard Time – midnight that same day for users in the UK on Greenwich Mean Time. The quiz is likely to prompt useful discussion in the webmaster central forum, as well as an accompanying follow-up blog post on the Webmaster Central blog.
