Google’s real-time search for marketing research

As Yahoo! rolls out its own version of real-time search, Google has announced that it has already added additional features to its real-time service – just days after implementing the technology across its search engine.

The new features for Google’s Search Appliance, however, are not aimed at the general Google userbase. Instead the company hopes to bring real-time results to market research.

Now, Google Search Appliance features the option to integrate twitter results into the software, allowing users to see tweets alongside their internal Search Appliance results.

Cyrus Mistry, product manager for Google Enterprise Search, explained the new feature in a post on her division’s official blog.

“Social information is important for businesses: employees searching for information needed to do their jobs benefit from real-time news too” she said. “They might be developing a new breakfast cereal, or designing a marketing plan for a clothing line, or writing strategy report for a political campaign.”
“In all of these cases, understanding what is being said just as Twitter users are saying it can be invaluable”.

The new feature may well be extremely useful for market research purposes; already, real-time search is predicted to offer search engine marketing professionals the opportunity to get a head start on developing online trends. This new feature will allow other businesses the opportunity to do the same, referencing their internal research and notices alongside online buzz.

“Customers have told us that placing web results next to intranet ones often allows employees to think differently about a particular topic and approach it in new ways,” says Mistry. “By integrating enterprise search with more of the information that exists in the cloud, like tweets, employees can more easily leverage the wisdom of the crowd.”
