Mobile search dominated by Google

When it comes to search engine marketing for mobile phones Google is by far the platform with the biggest reach, as a report from Pingdom shows that the company has reached a dominant market position that puts its share of universal search to shame.

A report from the bloggers at Pingdom generated from Statcounter data shows that Google has a staggering 98.29% share of the worldwide mobile search market.

Whilst this isn’t a huge leap from its 90.57% share of search excluding Mobile, it does mean that there is little to no room for competitors. Bing and Yahoo!, according to the report, have just 0.46% and 0.81% respectively of the Mobile search market.

According to Pingdom, Google’s impressive ‘land grab’ in Mobile search is the product of rapid growth into the area. One year ago, its share was 95.58% – only a few digits short of the current figure but statistically significant, as it represents hundreds of thousands if not millions of users around the world. At the same time, the mobile search market has likely increased in the total number of users as smartphones have become more and more popular over time.

The figures for Google seem to firmly reflect the opinions of CEO Eric Schmidt, who said in April this year that “mobility will be the way you will provision in the future…the answer should always be mobile first” and that “most people in the future will access internet mostly from mobile devices.”

Alongside the ongoing mobile targeting features in AdWords and the company’s development of the Android operating system, it seems likely that Google is firmly focused on the opportunities in mobile search.
