Mobile SEO to switch to Bing?

It is reported that Microsoft and Apple are currently discussing the possibility of altering the iPhone’s default search engine from Google to Bing. Such a change would make a vast difference to current mobile search engine marketing.

Online publication Business Week announced that sources have been quoted as saying that talks between the two giants have been going on for weeks and that Microsoft was being used as collateral in a descending feud between Apple and Google. Competition has been getting increasingly intense since Google launched its Android OS and Nexus One smartphones, in direct competition with Apple’s iPhone.

In previous years, such a claim would have been unheard of as Google helped Apple build the iPhone maps and YouTube applications. Indeed, Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google, even held a seat on Apple’s board of directors. Conversely, Microsoft for many years, was seen as the enemy of Apple as its direct rival.

It is rumoured that Google will suffer substantial financial losses, should Apple decide to change its default search engine to Bing - as most mobile advertising is viewed on iPhones or iPod Touches. As the most popular smartphone in the UK and US, any changes to default programmes would provide significant alterations in mobile search statistics.

Technology news website ZDNet has said that any possible change would mean a great deal to mobile SEO and comments that Bing’s application for iPhones is more aesthetically pleasing than its rival Google’s.
