”Most beautiful tweet” announced

Presenter, comedian and general broadcast favourite Stephen Fry has announced the ”most beautiful tweet ever tweeted” at the 2010 Hay Festival of Literature and Arts.

Fry himself is familiar with the content generation site, attracting a plethora of followers from his own Twitter micro blogging page. At last count, Fry had over 1.5 million followers and is one of the most popular celebrities on the site, beating the likes of Britney Spears, Jonathon Ross, Dave Matthews and Arnold Schwarzenegger, according to The Times.

The broadcaster chose the winner himself, unveiling the best tweet to be by Canadian Marc MacKenzie who wrote: ”I believe we can build a better world! Of course it’ll take a whole lot of rock, water and dirt. Also, not sure where to put it.”

Mr MacKenzie is no stranger to poignant tweets, having been shortlisted for Canada’s best tweet in the past, according to WebUser.

Cited in the BBC, MacKenzie commented on the popularity of his tweets, saying: ”What I like about it is how my brain works. Occasionally I have these odd thoughts that come to me and they amuse me so I jot them down. I like sharing them and it’s an interesting form to work with.”

Respecting his privacy, the best tweeter said: ”Despite the public nature of what I do with Twitter and Facebook, it’s not for me to divulge too much information about myself – although I would like more followers. I’m a conflicted person.”

Along with the most beautiful tweet, the competition featured a range of different categories, including best pun and most evocative tweet.
