Mobile commerce is set for a bumper Christmas as 15 per cent of US customers will conduct their shopping on a mobile device – double that of last year.
According to IBM – which conducted the study – users of the iPad, iPhone and Android-based devices are causing the massive shift toward mobile shopping.
Evidence from October already suggests that this figure will be hit, if not indeed overtaken. In October, IT Pro Portal reports that 11 per cent of people used a mobile device to access a retailers site, which is up 4.2 per cent from the same month in 2010.
Meanwhile, those involved in eCommerce search marketing may be interested to hear that the iPhone was the portal for four per cent of shoppers last month, with Android trailing just behind at 3.5 per cent.
IBM’s report also revealed that social media was a massive traffic driving resource, with Facebook providing 77 per cent of all social network shopping traffic in October.
“This November holiday season will mark the true advent of the post-PC era with consumers demonstrating a heightened interest in adding mobile devices to their holiday shopping arsenal,” commented John Squire, spokesman at IBM’s enterprise marketing management group, reports mobile trends site Mobile-Ent.biz.
“In response, savvy retailers must invest in delivering hyper-personalised, smarter commerce shopping experiences that are capable of building loyalty through multiple channels with exceptionally relevant promotions, free shipping and more,” he said.
