Public relations is due to take a dramatic turn thanks to social networking and SEO new media blogs. Old style PR, comprised of faxing and mailing out press releases and photos to target audiences is reportedly on the decline.
Today, email is favoured among the industry because it is quickest, but social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, MySpace and Meetup.com are the new way to send out a news release which can be seen by millions.
Reaching out to the masses today through established, accredited media outlets which have online news departments is the new form of public relations or NPR (New Public Relations). Such NPR is found on social networking sites where one only needs one news release sent out as part of a viral marketing plan.
SEO expert, Joel Leydon says: “Rather than advertising an upcoming special event, trade show or exhibition with 3 or 4 news releases, one only needs one search engine optimisation, PR news release to create a group on Facebook, an announcement on LinkedIn, Twitter and a paid announcement on MeetUp.com.”
Leydon believes that truly successful PR professionals today will take their journalism experience, ‘push the envelope’ and integrate their creative writing skills with SEO to reach the largest possible audience.
In this digital age, getting press releases out there means having a news and PR channel, which is the norm. It now must have organic qualities so that Google will carry it highly in their rankings, backed up with paid for Google Adwords and Facebook ads.
