SEARCH MARKETING NEWS

Social media sites and news were most popular search terms in 2009

Social media, communication and news sites were the most popular internet searches in 2009, it has been reported. Google has released a list of the most and least common search terms this year. It found that the most searched terms in its search engine were for Facebook, YouTube, BBC, Hotmail and games.

The report may be of interest to firms who use web hosting. The websites which have dominated search, all enable users to comment, share and transmit content which could potentially, indirectly, benefit custom hosting. Search engine optimisation expert Sam Tilson claims that internet users use Google and other search engines simply out of laziness, the user knows that if they type one word from the website they need, that the search engine will find it instantly, saving them typing a whole website address into the address bar.

Tilson also said that if website owners want to rank higher in search engine rankings, they need to monitor the news and upload relevant content which reference to topical and popular search terms. He said: “This will ensure the site is up to date and has content related to these high volume search terms, thus delivering traffic.”

Micheal Jackson’s death was the only search term to defeat social network Facebook in Google’s rankings. Google states they “studied the aggregation of billions of queries people typed into Google search this year”. They used many tools to compile the lists, “including Insights for Search, Google Trends and internal data tools.”
