It has been reported in Internet Marketing News that UK shoppers spent more online last year than their compatriots in other European countries.
A report by the Centre for Retail Research alongside price comparison website Kelkoo, found that Britons spent over £38 billion on web purchases during 2009. This figure is only set to increase, with the study predicting a 12.4 per cent rise to top £42 billion in 2010.
Search engine marketing and other internet marketing services have been seen to heighten consumer confidence with regards to making purchases on the web. The statistics back up this statement with BBC news reporting that the number of people spending over £1000 on an individual internet purchase rose from 12 per cent in 2008, to 25 per cent last year. At the end of 2009, internet purchases fulfilled 9.5 per cent of all retail sales in the UK.
Managing director at Kelkoo, Bruce Fair, said of the spending: ”This year is when we will really start to see online sales achieving a significant share of overall retail trade in the UK”.
As well as Britain, online purchases throughout Europe are predicted to grow by approximately 20 per cent according to the report by the Centre of Retail Research and are set to go over £152.8 billion in 2010.
